From Small Beginnings - Day 1

Me and My Sister
Hello, my name is Amelie, I am 9 years old and I live in Airth, which is a small village in Scotland. I also have a crazy little sister called Erin and with the help of our Mum, we would like to do something helpful to make the world a better place.

During Lent, people usually try to give something up or do something good to remember what Jesus taught us. We think Jesus basically wanted to make the world a better place for everyone, so we are going to try to find something simple every day that we can do to help with that.

We know that when lots of people do small things together, it makes a big difference.

We hope you enjoy reading our blog.......Amelie and Erin

Day 1 - February 11th 2016
Seals Harmed By Litter

Don't Drop Litter - Pick It Up When You Can

Everyone knows not to drop litter. It makes the place look untidy and messy but also it's really bad for animals and the environment. We really love animals and it makes us very sad when humans do things carelessly which hurt them. We'd like to say some simpe things which might help them.

Maybe you haven't thought about it but when you're having fun playing with balloons outside, what will happen if you let it go up in the sky?

It could end up in the ocean or in a field where an animal or a bird might eat it, get really sick and even die. Lots of things end up in our oceans, like cotton buds, straws and all sorts of bits of plastic, like bags and other packaging.

Turtles and other creatures think plastic bags are jelly fish and eat them, which causes terrible harm. Sometimes animals are found dead on beaches and when they are cut open or their body rots, it is fully of rubbish inside! All these chemicals going into our oceans have a really bad effect on the aminals and plants living in them and that is bad news for everyone.

We can help by not dropping litter but also by picking it up too (when it's safe to do this).
On a Litter Pick - Finding litter Everywhere.

We can think about what we do - like not letting off balloons and not buying things that will cause harm to the environment. We can make sure we don't flush things like cotton buds down the toilet and take care of our litter.

If we put things in the right bins to start with, they are less likely to end up doing animals harm. You can even recycle plastic bags like bread bags and other packaging, so that they don't end up blowing away from rubbish tips - sometimes you can even re-use them in a really useful way too!

If we all work together we can make the world a nicer, cleaner, tidier place to live for all the living things we share it with.

Thanks,

Amelie and Erin
